Eurosport, Discovery’s premium sports brand, today announced it has extended its partnership with the English Premier League in Romania for another three seasons, starting 2019-2020.

The agreement will see Eurosport in Romania hold exclusive TV and digital rights to England’s top-tier competition until 2022, with fans able to enjoy local commentary, Premier League highlights, as well as access to digital clips via Eurosport Romania’s platforms. Fans will be able to watch the matches live on Eurosport and simulcast on Eurosport Player, Eurosport’s live and on-demand service available anytime and on any device.

Victoria Davies, SVP Country Manager Discovery Networks CEE, Mediterranean and Central Asia, said: “The renewal of the rights clearly shows the strategic importance of the Romanian market in Discovery’s portfolio across the region, bringing the most exciting football league in the world to millions of fans across a football-mad country.

“Eurosport is proud to have contributed to the extraordinary popularity of the league since we first acquired the rights in 2013 and we are thrilled to continue this relationship for another three seasons. We are dedicated to fuelling the passion of Romania’s sports fans, bringing them an incredible selection of the greatest sports event globally.

“With the announcement of Premier League rights until 2022, plus the FA Cup until 2021, Discovery continues to build a fantastic proposition for sports fans in Romania where we are already the home of the best tennis events in the world. Add to that next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo as well as the GOLFTV product launched earlier this year, and we are extremely excited at the value our content brings to Romanian sports fans and our partners.”

Laurent Prud’homme, SVP Rights Acquisitions and Syndication, added: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with the Premier League in Romania, continuing a carefully considered, targeted and locally relevant premium sport play in Romania with the knowledge that the English Premier League has the ability to move the dial in this market.

“It is particularly pleasing to be able to continue to offer fans across Romania the opportunity to watch one of the most spectacular football leagues in the world on our platforms.”

Live English Premier League football complements Eurosport’s offering for sports fans in Romania which already includes live coverage of the four Grand Slams, the best cycling events on the calendar including the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and La Vuelta, world-class snooker as well as a host of winter sports events throughout the season.

The agreement to screen the Premier League follows Eurosport’s recent announcement that it has secured exclusive rights to broadcast the English FA Cup until 2021 in Romania, starting this weekend with Saturday’s evening’s tie between giant-killers Newport County and Manchester City.
